On behalf of the CPCA Leadership Team, I wish to thank all those who participated in our Annual General Meeting held on Oct 24th via Zoom. We had 40 registered for the AGM which included Full & Affiliate Members, and guests.
Up for election was the position of Secretary Treasurer. Our current Secretary Treasurer Phil Sovdi received a 100% Affirmation vote. Congratulations to Phil who has done an amazing job in this position during the previous two years. The financial report Phil provides to our Leadership Team monthly is precise and professional in appearance. His skills and accuracy as a Secretary recording the monthly Minutes are second to none. Phil is a huge asset to the CPCA. Thank you, Phil, for your dedication throughout 2024; myself and our team look forward to working alongside you in 2025/2026.
Proposed changes to our CPCA Constitution were up for a vote. The result was 100% in favor to adopt all proposed changes to our Constitution. Thank you to our Constitution Committee Chair First Vice President Robert Parmenter for your detailed presentation. Thank you to Robert and CPCA - ON Regional Director Charles Swartwood for all your work throughout 2024 in reassessing our Constitution and providing the membership with changes that will assist us with advancements in 2025. I have posted the new CPCA Constitution on our website which includes a printable copy. You may access our CPCA Constitution here
Also, I wish to express my gratitude to each chaplain on our CPCA Leadership Team whom I tasked with preparing a report for the AGM Information package. Your reports were concise and provided details that revealed accomplishments through 2024 in your area of responsibility, while also sharing your future goals for 2025. I expressed several times during our AGM that without contributions from each chaplain on our Leadership Team, I would be ineffective at best as your President. The CPCA exists to connect and equip chaplains serving law enforcement officers and their families across Canada. We need dedicated women and men to accomplish these tasks of service to our CPCA members.
Finally, thank you to each chaplain who renewed their CPCA membership in 2024, or who joined the CPCA for the first time. We grew by 18 new members in 2024, and my desire is to see that our growth will continue in 2025, and beyond. As your President for another year, I commit to continue to prepare and host three training webinars, Chaplains Connect events, increasing our Quick Reads (see new additions below), information sharing through various media sources, and personal contacts in 2025. We continue to need Regional Directors for the Canadian provinces that are not represented at this time. Please consider offering your service as a Regional Director if you are a current CPCA member in chaplaincy in Alberta, Quebec, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut.
Deepest appreciation,
Rev. Bruce Ewanyshyn
CPCA President
ICPC Director of Region 1
Two new additions to our website "Quick Reads" under our Reading Resources page
There are two new articles posted today on our CPCA website in "Quick Reads."
The first is an article authored by our former CPCA Registrar Hillar Alkok who is currently serving as a chaplain with Boots on the Ground. Hillar's article is entitled "Police Chaplaincy in Canada" and is rich with insight that comes from many experiences while serving as a chaplain with the Toronto Police Service. His article is reflective and instructional and will encourage you to ponder what chaplaincy is not, who you are as a chaplain, why you are the better option, and being a conduit. Here is a link to the CPCA Quick Reads. After clicking the link, you must scroll through or search Police Chaplaincy in Canada - An Article by Boots on the Ground Chaplain Hillar Alkok, and click on the "Read Now" button. Hillar's article can only be accessed by CPCA members who must "log in" to read it.
The second is an article authored by CPCA President and Honorary Chaplain of Brandon Police Service - Bruce Ewanyshyn. Bruce's article is entitled "Transition Need Not Diminish Significance" and is a transparent reflection of the challenges Bruce is facing after retiring from active law enforcement in May after over 33 years, combined with a move to a different province creating significant geographical distancing from his peers whom he served alongside as an officer, a chaplain, and a friend. It is a version of walking by faith and not by sight through obedience to God in the midst of sudden isolation and diverse life changes. Here is a link to the CPCA Quick Reads. After clicking the link, you must scroll through or search Transition Need Not Diminish Significance - an Article by Chaplain Bruce Ewanyshyn, and click on the "Read Now" button. Bruce's article can only be accessed by CPCA members who must "log in" to read it.
Currently, there are 25 articles available to CPCA members to read on our CPCA website under "Quick Reads." The authors vary from chaplains to police officers. They are rich in knowledge and may assist you as you "serve those who serve with excellence."
